This story follows the struggles of a farm labourer in North-East England. The series began with the novel, ‘Tom Fleck’, in which we followed Tom’s adventures, loves, and troubles in the year 1513, the year of the Battle of Flodden. The present book re-enters his life twenty-three years later in 1536, in the dark year of the dissolution of the monasteries and the subsequent rebellion known as ‘The Pilgrimage of Grace’. Tom is on a journey with his wife and blind daughter and must travel through the chaos.

An excellent yarn, and a great sequel to the author's "Tom Fleck." Set some time after the first novel, Tom is now a substantial citizen. He and his wife and daughter travel by land to London to collect a legacy, hoping also to find a remedy for the girl's blindness. After surmounting various dangers and difficulties they transact their business and turn for home, this time travelling by sea.

They face many more dangers, mostly man-made. The author's background in the merchant navy, plus meticulous research, make this voyage very vivid.

The clean sparse writing style make this yarn very readable. It's depiction of 16th century life is most convincing. My only complaint is that it doesn't go on to two or three times the length!

The Black Caravel Harry Nicholson 9781535378086 Books Reviews

The Black Caravel is exactly what I wanted after reading Tom Fleck. It was very dangerous to travel far in 1536 but Tom and family did it, so we get to know more about this man and his amazing wife. On the journey they meet some wonderful characters and have many adventures on land and on the high seas during the reign of Henry viii.
Five years have passed since Harry Nicholson brought Tom Fleck to readers’ attention. Tom was a rough diamond, admirable in his refusal to back down in the face of ridiculous odds. The climax of that first novel, the battle of Flodden Field, its horror described in no-holds barred language, left us wondering whatever did an ordinary working man do with his life after such a traumatic experience?
The answer is largely contained in The Black Caravel. I loved it. Nicholson’s research into the history of the time and, most impressively, the detail appertaining to boats and ships of that day, in no way puts a brake on a narrative that makes you sail along from page to page with a following wind.
Fleck’s marriage to the mystical Rachel has produced three offspring – the sea-faring Francis and Isaac and the disabled Kate, blinded by a throw from a horse.
Fleck has done all right for himself and in pursuit of further fortune he journeys with his family to London. This adventure was for me the book’s highlight overnighting in York, crossing the Humber and the arrival in the big city.
I like the way Nicholson handles tough situations – no detail spared, strong poetic language, a wealth of characters and facing realistic outcomes.
The relationship between historical events and this book is excellent. Some events such as the tidal wave had a basis in history, but not the period depicted.
